Olive Oil. More Good News.

Research suggests that Olive Oil isn’t just healthy – it can prevent cancer and help with weight loss too.

Professor of clinical medicine and nutritionist,  Dr. Mary Flynn has been studying olive oil for over 20 years;

“The general body of research,” she says, “is that once you have two or more tablespoons of Extra Virgin Olive Oil a day, you’ll improve your blood pressure, your glucose levels and your good cholesterol, but I’ve found that the weight-loss effect comes into play at three tablespoons, so that’s what I recommend. It’s an amazing food – it does all these things that help your body, plus it tastes good.”

Flynn also explains the extra benefits of consuming Extra Virgin Olive Oil as part of the Mediterranean Diet.

“This way of eating essentially takes the calories you’d normally be consuming with meat and gives them to vegetables and olive oil,” she says.

Support for Professor Flynn’s assertions came with her study of 44 women aged over fifty who had suffered from breast cancer. The woman tried two 8-week 1500 calorie per day diets – Professor Flynn’s olive oil rich diet and a low-fat diet created by the US National Cancer Institute.

After the 16 weeks, it was found that the women on the olive oil diet lost twice as much as those on the low-fat diet. They also showed improved breast cancer biomarkers, lower triglycerides and improved levels of the ‘good’ HDL cholesterol

Professor Flynn highlights;

“The key to the success of the olive oil diet is to cook vegetables in olive oil. There are two main reasons for this. The first is that carotenoids – the powerful antioxidants that give orange, yellow and red veg their colour and are also found in abundance in leafy greens – need fat to be absorbed.

“The second reason is arguably more important: Vegetables taste better with olive oil, so people are likely to eat more them My rule of thumb is one tablespoon of Extra Virgin Olive Oil to one cup of vegetables. Eating vegetables like this fills you up and stops you being hungry.”

So, at last, a diet that helps you lose weight, is healthy and delicious too. If you’re looking for a new you this New Year, what are you waiting for?
